WHAT IS VASER?
VASER is an advanced ultrasound technology used to assist fat removal and body contouring. Of course, the technology itself does not dictate results, but the surgeon performing the procedure. At Venus Medical, we pioneered VASER in Ireland. Dr Prendergast is the only official VASER instructor in this country, and trains other doctors in body contouring internationally.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PROCEDURE?
Dr Prendergast performs VASER of small and large areas totally under local (tumescent) anaesthesia without sedation or general anaesthesia. Tumescent anaesthesia is an extremely safe and effective technique to numb the treatment areas, so the fat can be removed painlessly. This form of anaesthesia also allows you to go home shortly after the procedure without the after-effects associated with general anaesthesia. There are three main steps to the procedure:
- Infiltration: slowly passing the diluted anaesthetic solution into the fat through tiny incisions using special cannulas or "sprinklers"
- Emulsification: once the areas are completely numb, the fat is "liquefied" using special fine VASER probes. These probes emit ultrasound waves, efficiently breaking down the fat whilst preserving other tissues such as blood vessels and nerves. Contouring the body in this way requires an artful eye and delicate, graceful movements of the probe.
- Aspiration: Once the fat has been emulsified, it can be easily extracted through gentle suction.
WHY VASER INSTEAD OF TRADITIONAL LIPOSUCTION?
Traditional liposuction involves simply suctioning fat from the body using suction cannulas and a vacuum device. VASER is different. The unique design of the VASER probes and tunable ultrasound delivery to the tissues results in efficient, selective, destruction of fat cells but limited injury to all other tissues. This translates to a quicker recovery with less swelling and bruising following the procedure. Also, ultrasound delivers smooth results and results in more skin tightening compared to traditional liposuction.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VASER AND LASER LIPOLYSIS?
According to Dr Prendergast, "There's no comparison between VASER and laser-assisted liposuction. The laser devices are less efficient at breaking down fat, so it takes a long time to remove the same volume of fat compared to VASER. I have treated several patients who previously had laser lipolysis, but had much better results following the VASER procedure here".
WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?
At Venus Medical, we treat almost all body areas, including face, neck, arms, male breasts, abdomen, love-handles, back, hips, thighs, knees, and calves. Rather than simply removing a localised pocket of fat, Dr Prendergast always performs true body contouring, and considers the body in aesthetic units. This means contouring the thighs circumferentially, for example, or contouring the upper and lower abdomen together with the flanks to give a better silhouette and harmonious result.
WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?
Results are seen as soon as 10 days following the procedure. A special garment, designed for this purpose, is worn for four weeks following the procedure to ensure optimum, smooth results and proper skin tightening. Results continue to improve for 3-4 months, so you can enjoy an improved contour day after day! Usually, patients return to work and near-normal activities within 2-3 days after the procedure.
